I was lucky enough to illustrate this monolithic Sc-Fi image to accompany Frozen Planet...1969' brand new song called the Mystery Wheel. It's out today and you can check out this amazingly fuzzy 25 minute previously unreleased jam now on their Bandcamp page.
This illustration was such a blast to work on and I got to stylistically reference some of my favorite Science Fiction and comic book illustrators including: Jack Kirby, Moebius, Herge and Mike Allred. Watch the image take shape from quite literally a doodle on a scrap of paper to its full colour glory in the animation below.

A very sad day for comic book fans and "True Belivers" everywhere. RIP Stan Lee, Excelsior. The Characters you help create and stories you told will live on for generations to come. I was lucky enough to meet Stan twice and he really was the man; funny, witty and really patient and kind to his fans!

The first time I meet him was at San Diego Comic Convention in 2006 he was so funny and loved seeing the old 1960's issue of the Incredible Hulk I got him to sign he turned and said to his helper "WOW Now this is an old one!" and had a good laugh when I showed him my travel diary entry for that day "Today I meet a fellow True Believer! I was luck enough to meet Stan again in 2014 when he came out to Sydney for Supanova. I knew I had to do something special so I made a custom Mego action figure of him. He absolutely loved it and all the work that went into it! Especially that I modeled his head off a Charlton Heston Planet of the Apes figure. To top off such a wonderful meeting his aide had me custom make another custom action figure of Stan Lee for his private collection, truly one of the greatest moments of my life. you can read more about this magical day here!
I was recently contacted by the guys from a local Sydney heavy-psych rock band called Frozen Planet....1969 about the possibility of illustrating the cover of their upcoming sixth album called The Heavy Medicinal Grand Exposition!

The pitch had my brain reeling from the get go. A concept album about a traveling medicine show, featuring a cast of colourful characters lead by a ring leader-snake oil salesman character the formidable Doctor Berner. The concept sees this rag tag group on a quest to sell bottles of his glowing green elixir, which will
apparently cure any pain and deliver anyone from evil all set to an improvised heavy-psyched-out instrumental adventure!

Needless to say this fantastic concept had me hook, line and sinker and I really went to town creating this group of characters and painting a vivid picture of the world they live in to accompany the music. There is the Savage Whistling Monkey and his Organ Grinder playing companion, the Indefinable duo Oddball Sundae, The Astonishing Juggler, The Swordsman, The Enchanting Oxandra Lanceolata and of course Doctor Berner himself. While the album itself is only 2 tracks the first track is divided into sections as the music shifts, which represent one of the characters.

Working on this project was an absolute dream come true. Designing the album cover itself on top of the illustration allowed me to add to the mythology of this traveling medicine show and I designed the gate-fold of the album to look like an old circus poster or program. The album itself has been released on vinyl by Headspin Records and even has a limited edition version on transparent green coloured vinyl. It was such a wonderful feeling to hold the finished copy in my hands, put the album on the record player and put the needle down.
Here's a look at a poster I created for Drey Rollan's tribute night to the iconic psychedelic concept albums of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters! Electric Mud and The Howlin' Wolf Album that were released by Chess records in the late 1960's. I based the illustration on one of the only know photographs of these two musical giants together which you can see below, I love everything about the original photo.

Meet the Barbeque Barbarians! I recently created and illustrated this rag tag group of characters and thought they would be perfect fodder to produce a wax pack of retro/vintage 1980's style collector cards.

The Barbeque Barbarians are; Burger Master, Shee-La, Fryer, The Sauceress, Hell Dog, Chook and The Rack. After a night of beer and barbecue, earth born Brax Anderson found himself transformed and transported to a savage, lawless land. Wielding the Sacred, Serrated Steak Knife of POWER, he leads the mighty Barbeque Barbarians into battle against an evil overlord and her mindless mercenaries. Each pack contains ALL 7 characters and is jam packed with so much retro goodness you will "Taste The POWER!"

Five Points Festival is a collision of art, toys, counterculture, and craft beer curated by Clutter Magazine and Fueled by Lagunitas Brewing Company. A designer toy, comic art and craft beer convention in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint Neighborhood, Five Points is two days and nights of vinyl and plastic toys, original art, indie designers, resin, plush, blind boxes, blanks, minis, kaiju, Japanese vinyl, posters, prints, apparel, craft beer and more – kicked-off by the Designer Toy Awards.
The antidote to the average con, Five Points brings tastemakers, misfits, and rebels together with the new, retro, and infamous in a one-of-a-kind marketplace.

Here is a look at a logo i designed for a friend who has a pipe organ tuning business. He wanted me to illustrate the pipe organ that resides in the Sydney Opera House (which he is responsible for tuning) as well as incorporating a tiny caricature of himself. I really proud of how this one turned out.
I hand-painted this gouache picture for my daughter's second birthday. It truly was a labor of love she is such a wonderful girl with a very kind heart. She is fascinated by all creatures great and small so I channeled one of the all time greatest illustrators Mary Blair to draw it in the style of little Rosemary's favorite golden book "I Can Fly". It's a Christmas miracle when you wake up to the news that the custom toy Thala Siren from Star Wars the Last Jedi that you created for a few laughs with your friends has been shared on social media by the one and only Luke Skywalker, Mr. Mark Hamil! 182,335 likes on Instagam and climbing... but who's counting? I've been a Star Wars fan my entire life so yes there definitely is a Santa Claus!John D-Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15249304608514094563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230842178911013934.post-27976012957094819952017-12-22T13:52:00.000+11:002019-02-28T16:20:56.917+11:00Milk Creature (Thala Siren) Custom Star Wars Action Figure

Well after watching Star Wars The Last Jedi what can I say...... I'm not gonna shy away from my general dislike of the film but the scene where Luke milks the teat of a giant sea creatures melted my brain and so I was compelled to create a custom action figure of my new favorite character out of the whole Star Wars mythology the Thala Siren.

I sculpted the creature with super sculptey, over a wire frame and aluminum foil musculature. I then painted her with hobby paints and created a custom box in the old school style of the Kenner originals. My rational here (other than showing my age) was that had this movie come out 30 years ago I am 100% sure they would have made an action figure of these Milk Creature, just as they made Tauntauns from the Empire Strikes Back, who even had an open belly rescue Luke action feature....gross.John D-Chttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15249304608514094563noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230842178911013934.post-54152736090563930932017-10-07T12:47:00.000+11:002017-10-18T13:00:45.040+11:00Face the Music - Exhibition Opening

<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">Hmm
electric, low brow, folk art portraits hahah! In all seriousness when I started
work on 'Face the Music' I wanted the portraits to be very graphic
representation of the musicians boiling down their essence as well as their
likenesses. When I initially sketched out the portraits I tried to not only
create good caricature based likenesses but to also include a sense of their
personality and music they created. I have been very deliberate in my colour
selection whether it's warm pastel colours to represent the wholesome sounds of
the 1950's or vibrant bold colours to illustrate the immense shift that took place in
popular music through the 1960s & 1970's. I have also selected certain eras
or costumes to represent significant points in the career of each musician to
again help create a graphic, instantly recognisable representation.

<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">Tell us more about the costumes you chose to depict each musician in?
Most
of the musicians I chose to paint have had quite extensive careers so I
did a lot of research to select the one outfit that I thought <span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">really <span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;"><span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;"><span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">summed it up. <span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">A
few examples are for the Beatles (as seen above) I really couldn't go
past their costumes from Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, this album
not only really changed the Beatles' career but also the idea of what
an album could represent and opened up the flood gates for 'concept
albums'. I painted Elvis Presley in his pink sports coat and blue and
black leisure shirt that he famously wore on his appearance on the
Milton Berle show in 1956. The television network received so many
complaints about Elvis' gyrating hips that he had to be filmed from the
shoulders up on the Ed Sullivan show. Jimi Hendrix had a number of
pretty fabulously flamboyant outfits throughout his career but I chose
to depict him in the yellow pirate shirt he wore at London’s Finsbury Park
Astoria on March 31, 1967 where he famously set his fender stratocaster
alight, again a very iconic image. For David Bowie I used the cover
image from his 1973 album Aladdin Sane the follow-up to his breakthrough
album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Bjork is another artist who has had so many wonderfully iconic and
unique outfits but I went with the swan dress that she famously wore to
the 2001 Academy Awards and also on the cover of her album Vespertine.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">Describe
your technique?
Each
portrait is painted on a flat timber block that I have hand sanded. I chose to
paint them on timber as I love the natural grain that shows through painting. I
have deliberately chosen to paint with a feathered border so you still get to see the
timber peeking behind the portrait. It also helps keep each portrait unique. I
initially wanted to use gouache paint for its vibrancy and flatness but It
doesn't create the most durable finish and I felt that placing the finished
portraits behind glass defeated the point of painting them of such lovely
pieces of timber. After a fair bit of trial and error I settled on using a mix
of flat matte acrylic and acrylic gouache paints to achieve a wonderfully
vibrant and flat matte opaque colour palette.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">How
does this differ from your other artwork and illustrations?

It
was really different for me to work with quite a simple brief this time
around
and to really develop a unique style, technique and visual language for
this
show. I am really happy with the end result; each piece is unique but
fits with the look of the exhibition. Another massive difference was
that I was
working manually. I usually work digitally or at least add digital
elements to
a hand-drawn sketches but for this show I wanted to work solely by hand.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">What
are some pros and cons to working solely by hand?
Well
I definitely love not working in front of a computer screen. It actually feels really
cathartic to be working manually on one thing at a time building a finished
piece of art one colour or layer at a time. I also really love the happy
accidents that happen when working by hand be it a little piece of white gesso
undercoat cheekily sticking out behind a background or a little swoosh of paint that
didn't quite go where you wanted it to go but feathered out beautifully. I find
these kind of happy accidents are pretty rare when you work digitally and they
are also really hard to replicate and always tend look a little forced or fake
when done digitally. There is one big con... No magic undo button that and
waiting for paint to dry.<span style="color: #454545; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 9.5pt;">
I was recently lucky enough to be a part of a wonderful live music performance. The gig was called B.B. King, Chuck Berry and Beyond : The Pioneers of Rock 'N' Roll and featured an ensemble of talented Sydney musicians from the Drey Rollan Band and The Cruisin' Deuces it was part of the very first, Sydney Guitar Festival. Drey had heard about my work painting iconic musicians for my upcoming exhibition 'Face the Music and asked me to illustrate B.B. King and Chick Berry and design a poster for the event. They also projected a massive time-lapse animation of me painting the portraits over the stage on the night.

The night was divided in three sections. During the first section the band played the songs that influenced the careers of B.B and Chuck, the second section showcased the songs of B.B. King and Chuck Berry and during the third section the band went on to perform song from musicians that have been influenced by B.B. King and Chuck Berry. All in all it was a fantastic night and I am super proud to have been part of it.
I've always thought Batman has the best rogues gallery of villains of any superhero and I recently decided to draw some of my favourites; The Penguin, Catwoman, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, The Scarecrow and Mr. Freeze.
I recently had the pleasure of drawing these two fabulous dancer and good friends who have just started a business teaching private dance lessons. The Illustrations were created to use on their business cards which I also designed. They specialise in teaching; Lindy Hop, Swing, Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, Balboa and Collegiate Shag so I went for a vintage feel to the illustrations and the design of the Business Card.
