Excitedly Embossed!

Well as you can see my hand embossing machine arrived in the mail today and I've been excitedly using it on every piece of scrap paper lying around my work bench.

For those of you who aren't familiar with embossing it is the process of creating a three-dimensional image or design in paper and other materials. This is achieved by using a die usually made of copper or brass and a counter die that fit together and squeeze the fibers of the substrate. This pressure raises the level of the image higher than the paper to make it three-dimensional.

The image below is of the counter die, as you can see my logo is mirrored and recessed into the die.

I designed two dies for my hand embossing machine. The first is a small version of my logo to be used on smaller prints and the second is a larger version of the logo with the words limited edition above it as well as a speech bubble space to pencil in the edition number and the edition size.

Here are the final results on a smooth cotton rag water colour paper.

  1. I love it! I guess you have to order specific dies and counter dies, and can't just make new ones yourself? I'm keen to see both the embossed paper and the machine itself.
