Dance Instructors Vintage Business Card Illustration

I recently had the pleasure of drawing these two fabulous dancer and good friends who have just started a business teaching private dance lessons. The Illustrations were created to use on their business cards which I also designed. They specialise in teaching; Lindy Hop, Swing, Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, Balboa and Collegiate Shag so I went for a vintage feel to the illustrations and the design of the Business Card.

Illustrated Library Genre Bookmarks - Series 4

This is the fourth series of genre bookmarks that I have been lucky enough to illustrate for my local library, Ashfield in Sydney. This project was such a fantastic one that I thoroughly enjoyed working on. It involved librarians choosing a genre and compiling a list of their favourite authors to recommend to their customers. I was then given the task of illustrating the front of each of the bookmarks.

The genres included: Comedy, Food and Travel. While illustrating the bookmarks I wanted to keep some graphic elements unified e.g. the placement of the open book and the centre circle. I then used colour, hand drawn silhouettes as well as positive and negative space to create illustrations that represented each genre.

I recently got to draw this series of illustrations for Layaway travel.

They tell the story of this little globe trotting piggy bank gradually saving up for his dream holiday on a tropical island!

I am really proud with how these vector illustrations turned out.
This series of illustrations have now even been turned into an adorable animated commercial which you can watch below!

Year of the Fire Monkey!

This is a poster I designed and illustrated for Ashfield Council's 2016 Lunar New Year festivities, through my work at Sweets Workshop.
The festivities celebrate, the ninth sign of the 12-year cycle and it is represented by a Monkey. In Chinese astrology, each year is associated with a Chinese zodiac animal sign and also one of the Five Elements, which makes 2016 a Fire Monkey.

I had a great time illustrating this cheeky golden Fire Monkey and  I used a traditional style and colour palate so it would be instantly recognisable as poster for Chinese New Year!

Happy Lunar New Year I hope you get to enjoy some festivities!!

Whatta Man - Salt 'N' Pepa with En Vogue, Song Poster Illustration Commission #3

I was recently commissioned to illustrate a fantastic project that was a little secretive as the end results was a wedding gift from a bride to be to her husband. Now that the wedding is over I can finally blog about it. The project was to illustrate three posters that visually represented three songs that were very significant to the couple. The end result was going to be three posters that they could hang in their home. The third song was Whatta Man by  Salt 'N' Pepa with En Vogue.

Well this poster was a whole heap of fun to illustrate. I decided to created caricatures of Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandra Denton (Pepa) and represent their rap (that among other things describes features of their perfect man) as a series of pictorial speech bubbles. I chose a colour scheme that would scream 1994, so I looked to the intro of the television show Fresh Prince of Bel Air for a little inspiration.

Sunny - Marvin Gaye, Song Poster Illustration Commission #2

I was recently commissioned to illustrate a fantastic project that was a little secretive as the end results was a wedding gift from a bride to be to her husband. Now that the wedding is over I can finally blog about it. The project was to illustrate three posters that visually represented three songs that were very significant to the couple. The end result was three posters that the couple could hang in their home. The second song was Sunny by Marvin Gaye.

With this poster rather than directly illustrating the lyrics, I wanted to visually represent the beautiful sunshiny feeling that you get from listening to this fabulous song.

True - Spandau Ballet, Song Poster Illustration Commission #1

I was recently commissioned to illustrate a fantastic project that was a little secretive as the end results was a wedding gift from a bride to be to her husband. Now that the wedding is over I can finally blog about it. The project was to illustrate three posters that visually represented three songs that were very significant to the couple. The end result was going to be three posters that they could hang in their home. The first song was True by Spandau Ballet.

With this poster I wanted to use iconography and minimal typography to illustrate the song's lyrics. I also wanted the poster to have an 80's colour pallet giving a sense of the period the song was from. I emblazoned the centre on the poster with the word "True" (the title of the song ) which I illustrated to have the appearance of a giant mirror ball to represent the big impact that the chorus of the song has.

Antibiotic Man and Antibiotic Woman, Superhero Comic Book Illustration Commision

Here is a look at a series of superhero comic book illustrations that I was commissioned to draw for a national antibiotic awareness, advertising campaign.

The campaign was used to create awareness of the misuse of antibiotics and how this ultimately leads to a decline in their effectiveness.

My brief was to illustrate a story that followed two superhero characters, Antibiotic Man and Antibiotic Woman. They get a call from a Doctor to go and help fight a mother and child's illness. Antibiotic Man and Antibiotic Woman are tough, strong and super powered when called upon to fight infection but if they are misused or used for the the wrong reason their strength in actual times of need diminishes.

The final illustrations were presented as a series of comic book panels. I had a heap of fun illustrating this body of work and working to a very tight deadline. The campaign was aimed at a broad range of the community so I decided to use a punchy retro comic book style. I wanted the panels to illustrate the narrative without the need for a great deal of wording. I also managed to pack in as many superhero cliches into the characters and panels as I could, from the Red Antibiotics hot line phone to Antibiotic Mans cleft chin and Antibiotic Woman bouffant hairstyle. Hopefully you'll get to see my illustrations coming soon to a doctor's surgery near you.

Boxing Kangaroo - K.O. Editorial Illustration

Here is a look at an editorial illustration commission I have just finished of a boxing kangaroo looking a little worse for wear, after a tough boxing bout. Traditionally the boxing kangaroo is a symbol often displayed prominently by Australian spectators at sporting events. It is an image that is widely considered Australia's sporting flag.

My illustration is to accompany an article discussing the tough time Australia is having in the global financial market at the moment. Hopefully this little guy has a good rest and finds his fighting spirit again really soon.

Genre Bookmarks for my local library

I was lucky enough to illustrate these genre bookmarks for my local library of Ashfield in Sydney through my work at Sweets Workshop. This project was such a fantastic one that I thoroughly enjoyed working on.

It involved librarians choosing a genre and compiling a list of their favourite authors to recommend to their customers. I was then given the task of illustrating the front of each of the bookmarks.

The genres included: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Australian, Cosy Crime, Crime & Thriller, Young Adult Fiction, Junior Fiction and my personal favourite Graphic Novels.

While illustrating the bookmarks I wanted to keep some graphic elements unified e.g. the placement of the open book and the centre circle.

I then used colour, hand drawn silhouettes as well as  positive and negative space to create illustrations that represented each genre.

Zombie Pinball!

I recently drew this illustration to be part of the inaugural Slam Tilt Zine, Australia's only Pinball and Rock 'n' Roll Zine! I thought the idea of a zombie playing a Game of Life pinball machine was pretty neat and ran with the idea!

If your interested in picking up a copy of the zine, head over to the Slam Tilt website.

Doctor Who Illustration Commission - The Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker

I recently received a fantastic email from a fan of my Pack of Heroes artwork asking if I do commissions and if so, would I be interested in doing an illustration of Doctor Who for him. Being a big fan of the Tardis-travelling Time Lord in my younger days I was thrilled to receive this request and promptly asked if I could draw the Doctor Who from my childhood, Tom Baker.

Of the eleven actors to play the character for me Tom Baker is the quintessential Doctor Who. Whenever I think of Doctor Who I think of him and hear his voice. I was a little nervous about representing his likeness in my illustration style but I am really happy with the result. There were a few extra items that I thought where mandatory inclusions in the illustration, of course there is the Tardis and sonic screwdriver but I thought having his extra-long scarf flowing right off the page would be a nice touch as would including a bag of his ever precious jelly babies.

A close up of the illustration showing the detail in the scarf.
My original pencil sketch.

The Harvenator

Happy new year everyone, thought i'd share a recent commission I did for a great little guy called Harvey! Harvey has managed to earn himself the nickname The Harvenator and his parents wanted to immortalise this in a piece of artwork similar to Mixator. As with Mixator, when creating The Harvenator I took on a few stylistic references from cartoons and action figure packaging design of the 1980s  and I couldn't be happier with the way final illustration turned out!
