Eye Scream Sundae Halloween Illustration

First up Happy Halloween! YAY! Here is a look at my illustration for this year's Food Fight collaborative exhibition and calendar at Sweets Workshop. Food Fight is an annual exhibition & calendar featuring artwork and recipes by Australian artists & makers. If you like the look of the calendar you can purchase it here.

This year's theme is Seasonal Love, so I decided to illustrate a Halloween piece to be featured in the month of October in the 2016 calendar. For this illustration I wanted to revisit the style and characters I created for my Haunted House Rock exhibition from a few years ago. I began by sketching a scene set inside a 1950's diner.

I wanted the scene to look like it was straight off the set of Happy Days, with Frankie out on a nice romantic Halloween date with his latest squeeze a seductive Vampirette. Also in the background I decided to draw a Teen Werewolf listening to his favorite new hit on the jukebox while howling at a female waitress who looks like she has emerged from the Black Lagoon.

To give this illustration a very vintage feel I dusted off my paint brushes and painted the final piece with gouache on illustration board which was a lot of fun I haven't taken the time to paint in years. I think using gouache really gave the illustration and authentic vintage feel.  For the calendar I also decided to include a small recipe for some gross eatable eye balls made of lychee's and raspberry licorice that can be added to add a touch of Halloween to any dessert! You can grab a copy of the calendar here.

Boxing Kangaroo - K.O. Editorial Illustration

Here is a look at an editorial illustration commission I have just finished of a boxing kangaroo looking a little worse for wear, after a tough boxing bout. Traditionally the boxing kangaroo is a symbol often displayed prominently by Australian spectators at sporting events. It is an image that is widely considered Australia's sporting flag.

My illustration is to accompany an article discussing the tough time Australia is having in the global financial market at the moment. Hopefully this little guy has a good rest and finds his fighting spirit again really soon.

Genre Bookmarks for my local library

I was lucky enough to illustrate these genre bookmarks for my local library of Ashfield in Sydney through my work at Sweets Workshop. This project was such a fantastic one that I thoroughly enjoyed working on.

It involved librarians choosing a genre and compiling a list of their favourite authors to recommend to their customers. I was then given the task of illustrating the front of each of the bookmarks.

The genres included: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Australian, Cosy Crime, Crime & Thriller, Young Adult Fiction, Junior Fiction and my personal favourite Graphic Novels.

While illustrating the bookmarks I wanted to keep some graphic elements unified e.g. the placement of the open book and the centre circle.

I then used colour, hand drawn silhouettes as well as  positive and negative space to create illustrations that represented each genre.

Happy Lunar New Year!

This is a poster I designed and illustrated for Ashfield's 2015 Lunar New Year festivities, through my work at Sweets Workshop. The events celebrate yáng, the eighth sign of the 12-year cycle that is represented by a goat, sheep or ram!

I had a great time illustrating this golden hybrid ram/sheep and used a traditional style and colour palate so it would be instantly recognisable as poster for Chinese New Year!
Happy Lunar New Year I hope you get to enjoy some festivities!!

Secret Santa - A Comic Book Inspired Christmas Card.

Who is this masked merrymaker running through the streets of Christmas Town? This is a Christmas card that I illustrated and designed for Sweets Workshop this year. I wanted Santa and his Elves to become superheroes... So I came up with Secret Santa and his Extraordinary Elves! The typographic and graphic design elements on the card were inspired by silver age comic book covers from the 1960's and 1970's.

This is the original sketch of Secret Santa and the Extraordinary Elves that I came up with.

Here is the final card all printed up on 100% recycled paper, you can pick it up from Sweets Workshop.

Do The Sausage Dance! - Limited Edition Print

I created this illustration for Sweets Workshop's Annual Food Fight Exhibition and Publication. The 2013 theme was The Festive Feast and what's more festive than a group of sausages having a dance! I've actually had a simple sketch of this design sitting in a sketch book for a few years now so it was great to have such a wonderful excuse to turn it into finished art.

The Posters are of a limited edition size of 100 and are all hand numbered by me. You can pick up a copy here.

The Resonance of Obsolescence-Gocco Prints

I recently dusted off my print Gocco machine again to create a set of four all new 2-colour prints for Sweets Workshop's third annual My Goodness My Gocco Exhibition.

This year I really wanted to create a series and thought it would be fun (and a little different to my usual character based illustration work) if I drew a few of my favourite things which I had lying around the house. As it so happened the four I ended up deciding on had one thing in common they were all things that could be described as being obsolete, so that's what I ran with. The idea of obsolescence then got me to thinking about the noises that these objects once made. Specifically that when an item of technology becomes obsolete or superseded the noises they once made are no longer heard, so I decided to start a bit of a conversation between them.

Attack of the Pizza!

For Dinner or Breakfast, Served Hot or Cold. You never know when it will strike.

So this blog post is a little late but last year I did the above illustration for Sweets Workshop's Annual Food Fight Exhibition which had the theme Snack Attack!

I wanted the illustration to look like a Sc-Fi  movie poster from the 1950's though I also drew a lot of inspiration from the original Topps Mars Attacks Trading Cards which were released in 1962.

The pizza alien characters carrying ray-guns in the poster are something I've been doodling since I was in about the 3rd grade. I had a pencil sharpener in the shape of a slice of pizza and when I used to stand it up the arrangement of the toppings on it resembled a face.

A hand numbered, limited edition print of this poster is available now over at Sweets Workshop's Online Shop.

Tea Towel

Here is a quick pic of a brand new tea towel I have designed called Dorothy Dish and Edward Spoon's Photo Album, it follows the love story of the Dorothy and Edward after that faithful meeting and is based on a zine I produced a while back. It's available now from Sweets Workshop.
