Mystery Wheel, Frozen Planet....1969 Sci-Fi Album Cover Illustration

I was lucky enough to illustrate this monolithic Sc-Fi image to accompany Frozen Planet...1969' brand new song called the Mystery Wheel. It's out today and you can check out this amazingly fuzzy 25 minute previously unreleased jam now on their Bandcamp page. This illustration was such a blast to work on and I got to stylistically reference some of my favorite Science Fiction and comic book illustrators including: Jack Kirby, Moebius, Herge and Mike Allred. Watch the image take shape from quite literally a doodle on a scrap of paper to its full colour glory in the animation below.

The Heavy Medicinal Grand Exposition, Frozen Planet....1969 Album Cover Illustration

I was recently contacted by the guys from a local Sydney heavy-psych rock band called Frozen Planet....1969 about the possibility of illustrating the cover of their upcoming sixth album called The Heavy Medicinal Grand Exposition!

The pitch had my brain reeling from the get go. A concept album about a traveling medicine show, featuring a cast of colourful characters lead by a ring leader-snake oil salesman character the formidable Doctor Berner. The concept sees this rag tag group on a quest to sell bottles of his glowing green elixir, which will apparently cure any pain and deliver anyone from evil all set to an improvised heavy-psyched-out instrumental adventure!

Needless to say this fantastic concept had me hook, line and sinker and I really went to town creating this group of characters and painting a vivid picture of the world they live in to accompany the music. There is the Savage Whistling Monkey and his Organ Grinder playing companion, the Indefinable duo Oddball Sundae, The Astonishing Juggler, The Swordsman, The Enchanting Oxandra Lanceolata and of course Doctor Berner himself. While the album itself is only 2 tracks the first track is divided into sections as the music shifts, which represent one of the characters.

Working on this project was an absolute dream come true. Designing the album cover itself on top of the illustration allowed me to add to the mythology of this traveling medicine show and I designed the gate-fold of the album to look like an old circus poster or program. The album itself has been released on vinyl by Headspin Records and even has a limited edition version on transparent green coloured vinyl. It was such a wonderful feeling to hold the finished copy in my hands, put the album on the record player and put the needle down.

Barbeque Barbarians - Vintage Style Trading Cards

Meet the Barbeque Barbarians! I recently created and illustrated this rag tag group of characters and thought they would be perfect fodder to produce a wax pack of retro/vintage 1980's style collector cards.

The Barbeque Barbarians are; Burger Master, Shee-La, Fryer, The Sauceress, Hell Dog, Chook and The Rack. After a night of beer and barbecue, earth born Brax Anderson found himself transformed and transported to a savage, lawless land. Wielding the Sacred, Serrated Steak Knife of POWER, he leads the mighty Barbeque Barbarians into battle against an evil overlord and her mindless mercenaries. Each pack contains ALL 7 characters and is jam packed with so much retro goodness you will "Taste The POWER!"

Each pack features all 7 characters and the card all feature a bio on the back. You can pick up a pack via my online shop here. I'm also in the very early stages of creating a comic featuring the heroic adventures of these guys, so watch this space.

Rosemary's Second Birthday Illustration

I hand-painted this gouache picture for my daughter's second birthday. It truly was a labor of love she is such a wonderful girl with a very kind heart. She is fascinated by all creatures great and small so I channeled one of the all time greatest illustrators Mary Blair to draw it in the style of little Rosemary's favorite golden book "I Can Fly".

B.B. King Chuck Berry and Beyond - The Pioneers of Rock 'N' Roll

I was recently lucky enough to be a part of a wonderful live music performance. The gig was called B.B. King, Chuck Berry and Beyond : The Pioneers of Rock 'N' Roll and featured an ensemble of talented Sydney musicians from the Drey Rollan Band and The Cruisin' Deuces it was part of the very first, Sydney Guitar Festival. Drey had heard about my work painting iconic musicians for my upcoming exhibition 'Face the Music and asked me to illustrate B.B. King and Chick Berry and design a poster for the event. They also projected a massive time-lapse animation of me painting the portraits over the stage on the night.

The night was divided in three sections. During the first section the band played the songs that influenced the careers of B.B and Chuck, the second section showcased the songs of B.B. King and Chuck Berry and during the third section the band went on to perform song from musicians that have been influenced by B.B. King and Chuck Berry. All in all it was a fantastic night and I am super proud to have been part of it.

Bat Baddies Zine

I've always thought Batman has the best rogues gallery of villains of any superhero and I recently decided to draw some of my favourites; The Penguin, Catwoman, The Joker, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, The Scarecrow and Mr. Freeze.

I went with a bit of a retro vibe surprise, surprise and I was really happy with outcome. I printed out a few and folded them down into a mini zine called Bat Baddies which I had for sale at the MCA Zine Fair.

Here is a photo of my stall at the MCA Zine Fair, It was such a lovely day and a real pleasure to meet so many like minded people! Huge thanks to everybody who stopped by to say hi!

The Illustrations were created to use on their business cards which I also designed. They specialise in teaching; Lindy Hop, Swing, Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, Balboa and Collegiate Shag so I went for a vintage feel to the illustrations and the design of the Business Card.

Illustrated Library Genre Bookmarks - Series 4

This is the fourth series of genre bookmarks that I have been lucky enough to illustrate for my local library, Ashfield in Sydney. This project was such a fantastic one that I thoroughly enjoyed working on. It involved librarians choosing a genre and compiling a list of their favourite authors to recommend to their customers. I was then given the task of illustrating the front of each of the bookmarks.

The genres included: Comedy, Food and Travel. While illustrating the bookmarks I wanted to keep some graphic elements unified e.g. the placement of the open book and the centre circle. I then used colour, hand drawn silhouettes as well as positive and negative space to create illustrations that represented each genre.
